I didn't have any burnt umber oil paint so I tried good old brown shoe polish instead. I think the chairs might look dirty rather than weathered?

This is the look I am going for. It is the Unwharrie Bridgehampton Kids Chair. Price $649.00. Maybe staining, then painting and sanding would achieve this finish?

Yes Kathi, stain....Probably a light color from the looks of the chair. Then paint. Then go over the edges with sandpaper. If you still want it dirtier, do a bit of antiquing with thinned paint or the shoepolish. Either would work.
