Quick Question

What can you use to seal balsa wood so it won't warp? I've found that paint soaks in and raises the grain of the wood too. I would like to avoid that also.

Got any ideas?

There is a "sanding sealer" that would probably work but usually rely on white glue... I use the thin stuff and just paint it on both sides. I think you'll have fewer issues with basswood. I don't think it costs any more. All water-based products will raise the grain and require sanding. I find even some oil-based stains require sanding to look really nice.

What are you working on?

Kathi, please take Tabitha's advice. If you want your minis to last, don't use balsa for anything but the insides of upholstered furniture. It isn't meant to be stained, sealed or painted. It also doesn't hold up because it is so soft. Bass wood is not quite as easy to cut, but in the long run, it is worth the extra time and trouble. Is it for the stairs?

I am planning to use basswood for the stairs. I'm going to be working on my kitchen soon and was wondering if I could get away with balsa. Guess not.
Thanks for your tips and advice! :D
