How Are We Doing?

It is sunny and "warm" here in Birmingham today! Warm enough to paint! :D

I thought I would quickly prime Birgit's little chairs with spray primer. You know, to help speed up the painting processs. . .

I took the chairs outside and gave them a quick spray. THEN it started to RAIN! Oh no!

I ran out, scooped up the chairs on the newspaper and brought them inside. I dropped one! It broke.

Then I saw the question on my Walgreen's receipt. "How are we doing?"

Not so good. The rest will be done by hand. I promise.

Followers Give-A Way!

I finally finished making the gifts for my 300+ followers give-a-way! I think everyone needs an escape from the winter weather. Let's go to the beach!

Wood Glue

Thanks for your helpful suggestions! I sanded off some paint and am using wood glue to try to assemble my chair.

I tried to use my new MicroMark gluing jig. It hasn't been much help with this project. I am using a little level to try to get things straight. I'm waiting for the glue to dry on these pieces before I continue.

This is a fine mess I've gotten myself into! I had the idea of building these chairs on December 31st! I never figured this would take so long!

25 Piece 3-D Puzzle

I'm still working on the adironack chairs. Each one has 25 pieces!

Maybe if Grandpa helps, we can get one chair finished today?

My New Best Friend

Ah, the smell of sawdust and the soothing sound of my Dear Dremel! I love it!



This was the first time I had used my Dremel. It takes some practice. Letting the tool do the work was the hardest part for me. Once I figured that out it was sheer joy!




I was able to shape the arms and side rails for my chairs with ease.

MY Dremel is back in the charger of a while. I'll probably use it to sand my pieces too. Then I can start painting! :D

I'm thinking now that I'll paint them in lighter, but still tropical colors. The weathered look became too much of a challenge and I really didn't like what I came up with.

It is 24 degrees here in Alabama this morning. We're expecting snow this afternoon. Tonight more snow and then ice tomorrow. I'm hoping that our office will close so I can stay home and finish my chairs! :D

Trying Different Finishes

I'm trying different techniques to get the right finish for my chairs. I would like them to look bright, but weathered a bit.

First I painted some extra pieces of wood with acrylic paint.

Then I used "Weather-It" from MicroMark over the paint. It really didn't do much.

Next I tried coloring some wooden pieces with crayons.

Then I dipped them in poly stain and wiped off the excess.

I like this look better. I may try a couple more finishes before I decide which one to use? If you have any suggestions, please let me know. :D

I'm also going to try my Dremel to shape the side supports and arms of the chairs. I carved these with a razor blade.

I'm sure the Dremel will be easier (?) and safer! I haven't used my Dremel since I purchased it over a year ago. Hope I can figure it out. . .

How Much Wood?

How much wood could a woodchuck chuck if a woodchuck could chuck wood?
I don't know, but it sure takes a lot of wood to make four adirondack chairs!



8 front legs, 8 back legs, 8 arms, 24 seat slats, 8 side rails, 4 front supports, 4 back supports, 4 wide back pieces and 24 narrow back pieces to be exact.

Now the fun begins!
